Weekend at Jemez Falls campground, New Mexico
June 2-3rd, 2012
We purchased a pop-up camper, Palomino Banshee, for our anniversary, so we decided to take it out for a test run to a nearby campground. Jemez is roughly 2 hours drive from Albuquerque, and since we had never been there, it seemed to be the obvious choice.
Early Saturday morning we left our house, arriving at Jemez Falls campground. The entrance sign said "Campground FULL", but we knew that there must be at least one group packing up to leave so we drove around through the loops. One group was packing up their car and waved at us as we passed by. We drove back to the entrance of the campground, took a payment envelope, then headed back to the site to see if they were gone. Their car pulled out and we pulled in. Perfect timing!
After setting up the camper, we set out for a short hike to the Jemez Falls. From the campground, the hike is only around 1/2 mile and is a very popular hike.
After the waterfall hike, we fixed lunch then drove just north to the area of Calle Baldera and the burn area from the fire last year. We stopped to take a few photos, then returned back towards our campground. Along Hwy 4 is the trailhead for several other nice hikes so we stopped to check them out for future trips to the area.
Our trip to Jemez was a success! Our pop-up camper worked well and we enjoyed using it. We were also able to explore an area we had heard about but had never had a chance to visit. We will definitely be back.
